“Appropriate” Antique Japanese screen calligraphy painting

Art MFA Slides-9614 copy
Appropriate, 2017, pigment on antique screen

I used an antique Japanese folding screen (c.1950) as a contemporary surface with a history, to mark a proclamation of an ideological descent to the traditions from which my calligraphic skill arose. By doing this I want to re-examine current conversations around cultural appropriation, that don’t account for the fuzzy hybrid identities and practices of post-globalized culture.
